International Women's Day 2005

International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations on 8 March 2005 were held in the rural district of Malay district, Banteay Meanchey province, north western Cambodia.

Under the theme “Getting together building a society free of violence and AIDS”, a three day series of women focused events were organized to celebrate International Women’s Day. In the main, this included a movie screening, door to door home visits, a community meeting focused on the history of International Women’s Day, a cultural performance highlighting violence, HIV/AIDS, drugs and an interactive question and answer session on the subjects of violence, HIV/AIDS and drugs.

The media also played a significant role in the IWD campaign. GAD/C hosted both a national radio broadcast and a live television talk show. The radio talk show focused on the theme of International Women’s Day “Getting together building a society free of violence and AIDS.” and included interviews with representatives of women focused NGOs in Cambodia, Gender and Development for Cambodia (GAD/C) and Gender and Development Network (GADNet) members.

The televised round table discussion was hosted by the coordinator of the Cambodian Men’s Network (CMN) Mr. Chhay Kim Sore, a well known advocate on gender issues in Cambodia. This discussion highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day (IWD) and enabled influenced figures, such as H.E Pok Than, secretariat of Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to share their experiences and definitions of what it means to be a good supportive husband, father, and role model for younger generations.

The talk show highlighted the vital role women play in Cambodia society and the struggle towards women’s equality.

In support of IWD, product giveaways were also conducted at community level. Each item highlighted the theme of IWD and some 921 T-shirts, 12 banners 2848 books, 1200 leaflets, 626 posters, 95 calendars, and 20 big boxes condoms were distributed throughout the campaign period.

In all, almost 3000 community members joined in the campaign celebrations.

The success of IWD activities can be attributed to the close cooperation of GAD/C and the Provincial Department of Women Affairs, local authorities, the Vice District Governor of Malay district, the CEDAW committee in Cambodia, Punleu Kumar (LNGO) and Christian World Services (CWS). We thank them for their support.

GAD/C would also like to thank donors Diakonia, ICCO, and Danchurch AID for their generous support of IWD 2005.
